STO (Shutdown, Turnaround, Outage) Community of Practice Free Breakfast Event – Leduc, AB
You’re invited to attend a free breakfast event in Leduc, AB (Best Western Premier Denham Inn & Suites) on Friday, February 28th, 2020 from 08h00 to 11h00 with an optional 2-hour afternoon mini-workshop on Strategic Execution Management with Nav-x®.
Following the success of our first Community of Practice breakfast event (Calgary, Oct 2019) we’re excited to have the opportunity to grow this community with the support of local Operators, Contractors, and Vendors.
“Our mission and purpose are to provide a community of like-minded individuals with a format for sharing lessons-learned and best-practices related to shutdown, turnaround & outage performance.”
The theme for this session is safe, reliable and efficient execution of STO events by sharing lessons-learned and best-practices in an informal, facilitated open-mic-style discussion with emphasis on Methodology |Technology | People |
Keynote Speaker: P.A. Reier (Pete) | RPOS Ltd Owner
Pete is a specialist in Process Operations, entering the business by choice in 1980, accepting an opportunity in operations at a Petro Canada Light Crude Refinery and Gas Processing facility, and entering the Power Engineering program.
Over the years Pete continuously stepped up for any assignment or opportunity to work with projects, expansions, and turnarounds; eventually there was no denying that Pete had become a Facility Major Maintenance Specialist.
In 2015 Pete was lured away from his Operations homeland to participate in an initiative to create a company-wide Turnaround Process and implement the process. In 2017 Pete became the Manager for the resulting Shutdown Management Process and the Team.
As 2020 rolled up Pete has stepped away from the Corporate world, pension in hand—accepting a pension cheque is one thing, retiring is quite another.
Pete originally incorporated RPOS in 2007 but accepting ever increasing commitments in the day job put development on the backburner. Pete is offering the insights from four decades of Operations and Major Maintenance expertise with Reier Process Operations Specialists Ltd.
Breakfast Keynote Topic & Abstract
Execution Excellence Starts Here!
Excellence in Turnaround Execution is a journey, and not typically a sightseeing cruise.
The road to Turnaround Execution Excellence is better characterized as an expedition.
Excellence is not achieved through any single source solution. Turnarounds are one of the most complex Dynamic Project Management challenges in existence, and like all complex trials, true Excellence will require many deliverables.
Process is important, we all understand the cost consequences of the Gunslinger approach.
Schedule is critical, and if we are honest, our new IT realities have dramatically changed the very definitions of Schedule compliance and related potentials, but before our Process will matter, before there is a schedule to comply to, there needs to be two things—Scope, and Timeline.
- Commitment to Timelines begins with a meaningful Long-Range Plan, learn simple strategies to produce a solid 10-year plan.
- Scope, in two parts:
- Scope collection and approval see how commitment to Timelines did 80% of the work for us, and how to finish it almost painlessly.
- Scope Control guess what the biggest challenge to our Scope Control process is?

In memory of John A. McLay, who passed away on January 15th, 2020 after a courageous, lengthy battle with cancer, we will be honoring his career achievements and numerous contributions to the industry with a posthumous award.
John was looking forward to attending this in-his-own-backyard breakfast event; instead, he’ll be smiling down on us from upstream (way up) where he’s probably inspecting heavenly vessels, instructing & mentoring angels, and cloud golfing.
This session is sponsored by Progressive Plan Inc. and STO Navigator Inc.; however, without your interest and enthusiasm, without your involvement and contribution to key topic discussions, its mission and purpose would not be realized. Thank you for your consideration; we look forward to seeing you on Friday, February 28th in Leduc, AB
